I, too, just finished Carkeet's article in the Smithsonian--I have finally caught up on grading!? I did enjoy it, mainly; however, I was disappointed by Terrell Dempsey's unfortunate comments on Twain and Hannibal. ??

Subject: Carkeet article in Smithsonian

If it was mentioned here already, I missed it. I just read -The Twain
Shall Meet- in the April 2014 Smithsonian magazine (my favorite.) It was
fun to read since I
hope I might be somewhere on the Mississippi after a trip to New Orleans in
February.

Two details in it I didn't remember ever hearing before. One was the
mention of a young Samuel Clemens applying for a stipend from some
Abolitionists and the other that he once was a stowaway on a river boat
when he was young.

If any of you missed the article by David Carkeet, I recommend that you
check it out at Smithsonian.com.
