One important contribution was from Kalecki, 1944, 'Professor Pigou 
on "The Classical Stationary State": A Comment,' Economic Journal, 
Vol. LIV, No. 1, pp. 131-32.  Since that article relates to real 
balance effects type arguments, and you ask for "references made by 
various thinkers regarding deflation and its effects" one must also 
consider those arguments that deflation is or can be expansionary 
(and the counter-arguments).  By the way, during the last downturn, 
there was a good article in the Economist on the dangers of deflation
