Jean mentioned the Masterworks.  I still use them.  The copyright is owned 
by Richard Lamm, CEO of Norton, although it was published by McGraw Hill. 
 
He gives me permission to reprint it for my classes.  I suspect that if the 
list wanted to put together a collection together with a committment to use 
it for a while, a publisher would print it. 
 
The problem is that they are too dense to realize that a cannonical 
collection for the History of Thought is different from a collection of 
short stories.  We would all want some Smith, Ricardo, Marx.  The 
differences 
would arise when we go back much further or continue past Marx.
