It with with deep regret and sorrow that I learned of the death of my close
friend, Howard Baetzhold. During the several years that Howard and I
worked on The Bible According to Mark Twain, I came not only to appreciate
his great mind, but to value him even more as a friend, who not only taught
me much about Mark Twain, but even more importantly the value of
generosity. During our trips to Elmira, we took long genial walks, along
with our spouses, getting to know Mark Twain better, and even more
importantly, getting to know one another. Along with so many other Mark
Twain scholars, I hold a special place in my heart for Howard.
