Mark Twain was made an honorary member on the evening of June 3, 1906 at the
University of Missouri. He stayed at the home of his relative James Ross
Clemens (father of Cyril Clemens) who is chiefly remembered because it was
his illness that sparked rumors of Twain's demise which in turn provoked
Twain's famous response.

I own Twain's gold PBK key which is engraved "S. R. Clemens" --apparently
the engraver conflated J R Clemens and S L Clemens. It passed down in the
residual estate of Clara Clemens. Not sure the image will go through to the
listserv, but I've attached it on the off-chance.

Ben; I think it was his [final] visit back here to his home state, in 1902.

Forum:

I happened to walk by a flier at my college that was advertising The Phi
Beta Kappa Society. The flier lists famous members--Twain as one, his
photo sandwiched between Sheryl Sanders and Sonia Sotomayor.

I didn't know this about him. So, is it true and does anyone know when he
was made a member?

Thanks,

Ben
