At the Ontario Library Association Policy Conference in November we will
be discussing internet filtering. I have be asked to prepare some
background information on the topic. If you know of any interesting
sites on the internet which should be included please contact me, either
by email, phone 519-471-1538 or fax at 519-5396

One change in the program this session will be conducted by Margaret
Mitchell, Director Public Services, London Public Library.

List below is the Policy Form description of this session.

Thanks in advance.

Meeting #1:
Ontario Public Library Association
Ontario Library and Information Technology Association
                        OLA Intellectual Freedom Task Force
DEVELOPING A POSITION ON INTERNET FILTERING
Chair: Alastair Neely, OPLA Vice President
Internet filtering has been a very major issue in the press, among
individual public groups and in libraries themselves. Challenges to
internet policy in general continue to happen, most recently in London
where the Police Commission has promoted filtering at London Public
Library. At one point, there was rumour that the Police Commission was
intending to go to the provincial level of its organization and attempt
to
get a policy supporting internet filtering in public institutions.
Although
we have no reason to believe that this is happening, it does raise a
number
of questions for the library world and for the Association.
