Late Life Depression: Psychosocial Considerations and Approaches

AN ONLINE WORKSHOP FOR HEALTHCARE & OTHER PROFESSIONALS Monday May 4th to Sunday May 31st, 2015 (Online weekly at your discretion)
Cost: $240 (Students $120) 
This workshop will be offered only be if there is sufficient enrolment.  Registration and payment available online at:

This introductory level workshop will focus on late life depression and present an overview of psychosocial considerations and approaches for interdisciplinary health care providers.  Using a social determinants of health approach, this workshop will include case based learning and offer key resources and evidence for assessment and intervention.
Outline:
1. Week One: Introduction to Late Life Depression
•     Prevalence / Incidence
•     Risk Factors
•     Protective and Precipitating Factors
•     Ageism & Stigma

2. Week Two: Using a social determinants of health lens to understand late life depression
•     Social determinants of health and mental health
•     Linking psychosocial approaches to depression with social determinants
•     Provider as advocate

3. Week Three: Assessment Tools for Late Life Depression & Resources for Health Care Providers 

4. Week Four: Evidence Informed Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Late Life Depression

Instructor:  Kim Wilson, Assistant Professor, Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, University of Guelph Kimberley Wilson is the former Executive Director of the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health, (2007-2013), where she led the National Guidelines for Seniors’ Mental Health Implementation and Knowledge Translation Projects.  Kim is an Assistant Professor in Adult Development and Aging, in the department of Family Relations & Applied Nutrition at the University of Guelph.  Her research and teaching focuses on seniors’ mental health and well-being.
