Before the term "utility", and in the same economic meaning, the term 
"usefulness"  was employed. I have met it, in a paper of Joplin (An 
Essay on Money and Bullion, 1718), prefiguring the Walras's value 
theory. Before that, it's possible to find the term "utility" in some 
essays of Bacon, but not (as for as I remember) in an economic meaning.
