I recently had occasion to re-read the old debate between JS Mill and
William Whewell over the true path towards the confirmation of theories,
and it struck me as an episode that has lots of unexplored historical and
philosophical potential. I'm curious to know whether anyone is currently
working on this. It seems that there was considerable interest in the
debate in the late 80s and the first couple years of the 90s,
culminating in Fisch and Schaffer's 1991 collection on Whewell. If anyone
is currently doing anything related to Mill's and/or Whewell's views on
method, I'd be interested to hear about it.
