Dear Ms Illes,
A new and very good look at the philosophical question of self in
society--discussing the intellectual underpinnings to the cultural
expressions during this period--is _The Masterless: Self and Society in
Modern America_ by Wilfred M. McClay, published in 1994.

This is a great topic--enjoy yourself.

Best regards,
Sharon Smith, University of Oregon
