8Rs RESEARCH TEAM TO CONDUCT STUDY ON HUMAN RESOURCES
IN HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDMONTON (May 9, 2003) - A research team out of the University of Alberta,
in partnership with the heritage community, is pleased to announce an
important study of human resources in Canadian archives, libraries and
museums.

The 8Rs study will gather information on current human resource issues of
concern to heritage institutions. The study draws its focus from eight core
issues that inform human resource capacity in the heritage sector:
recruitment, retention, remuneration, repatriation, rejuvenation,
reaccreditation, retirement, and restructuring.

Discussion in the archival, library and museum communities regarding
projected shortages of professionals in heritage institutions is widespread;
however, much of this discussion is based upon anecdotal evidence, with
little hard data. The 8Rs study will address this situation through the
collection of data that will bring into focus the current picture of
heritage institutions. The data will also provide benchmark indicators upon
which to base future study.

The survey will be conducted with support from the heritage community's four
major professional associations: the Canadian Council of Archives,
l'Association pour l'avancement des sciences et des techniques de la
documentation, the Canadian Library Association, and the Canadian Museums
Association, and with financial assistance from the federal government's
Department of Canadian Heritage.

Over the next two months, archives, libraries and museums will be surveyed
in both official languages. The results will be shared at a national
heritage summit in the early fall and in a final report later this year.

The study will continue after this stage with a specific focus on libraries,
librarians, paraprofessionals, and library education. Interim reports will
be released periodically over the following eighteen months.

DANS LES ÉTABLISSEMENTS DU PATRIMOINE

EDMONTON (9 mai 2003) - Une équipe de chercheurs de la University of Alberta
est fière d'annoncer qu'elle procédera, en collaboration avec d'autres
établissements du patrimoine, à une étude majeure portant sur les ressources
humaines dans les archives, bibliothèques et musées canadiens.

Cette étude, baptisée « 8R » en anglais, rassemblera des données sur la
situation actuelle des ressources humaines dans les établissements du
patrimoine. L'étude se concentrera principalement sur huit des principales
questions entourant les ressources humaines au sein de ces établissements :
le recrutement, le maintien du personnel, la rémunération, le rapatriement,
le rajeunissement, l'agrément, la retraite et la restructuration.

La pénurie de main-d'oeuvre professionnelle que s'attend à connaître le
milieu des archives, des bibliothèques et des musées est un sujet qui
alimente bien des discussions dans les institutions du patrimoine.
Toutefois, les données concrètes appuyant ces échanges se font rares.
L'étude des huit aspects déjà mentionnés comblera cette lacune en
recueillant des renseignements qui permettront une meilleure évaluation de
la situation actuelle des établissements du patrimoine. Ces données
constitueront également un point de référence pour d'éventuelles études.

Quatre associations professionnelles majeures du milieu des établissements
du patrimoine, soit le Conseil canadien des archives, l'Association pour
l'avancement des sciences et des techniques de la documentation, la Canadian
Library Association et l'Association des musées canadiens, participeront à
l'étude. De plus, le gouvernement fédéral consentira une aide financière par
l'entremise de Patrimoine canadien.

Au cours des deux prochains mois, des archives, bibliothèques et musées
seront appelés à répondre à un sondage dans les deux langues officielles.
Les résultats seront dévoilés à l'automne, lors d'un sommet national sur le
patrimoine. La publication d'un rapport final suivra plus tard cette année.

Une fois cette étape du projet complétée, on portera une attention
particulière aux bibliothèques, aux bibliothécaires, au personnel
paraprofessionnel et à l'enseignement de la bibliothéconomie. Des rapports
provisoires seront publiés périodiquement au cours des dix-huit mois
suivants.
