American Philosophical Society 
Research Grants Programs, 1996 
 
     The American Philosophical Society, the nation's oldest 
learned society, began its program to assist the research of 
individual scholars in 1933. In the first six decades of research 
support the Society awarded more than $ 16 million to over 13,000 
scholars. It has provided more than twice that sum to promote 
other scholarly projects. APA makes grants towards the cost of 
scholarly research in all areas of knowledge except those in 
which support by government or corporate enterprise is more 
appropriate. Applicants are normally expected to have a doctorate 
but applications will be considered from persons whose 
publications display equivalent scholarly achievement. Grants are 
rarely made to persons who have held the doctorate less than a 
year, and never for pre-doctoral study or research. For 
application forms, indicate briefly eligibility for the program, 
nature of the research (e.g. archival, laboratory, fieldwork, 
etc.), and proposed use of grant funds (travel, purchase of 
microfilm, etc.) in a letter to the Committee on Research, 104
