Kuznets (pp. 2-3) defines membership in the Jewish community as follows:
a. Common history
b. Common religion, including religious participation
c. A feeling of belonging to the group
d. A feeling of distinctiveness from other groups

Kuznets admits that these characteristics are not an "infallible" method
of identifying Jews. But he says that this is how Jews are recognized in
real life.
