As to citations, but in a different context:
Especially annoying are references to Theory of Moral
Sentiments and Wealth of Nations. The edition of TMS by Raphael and
Macfie is that of 1790 (with changes from an edition of 1792
included), NOT 1759; the corresponding Oxford edition of WN is that
of 1789, NOT 1776. Yet the madness persists!
Mill, however, seems to have been spared. His Principles of
1848 is typically referenced as having been published is 1871, as
this is the date of the Ashley edition.
Is it too much to ask that the correct edition be referenced,
with of course inclusion of the date of publication of the specific
edition cited, and perhaps a note as to the date of the first edition?
