The best source I know of on the British Money System is
Sir Albert Edgar Feaveryear's THE POUND STERLING; A HISTORY OF ENGLISH
MONEY, 2nd revised edition, Oxford, Clarendon, 1963, 446pp. This book
will not only answer your questions, but will provide you with
fascinating summer reading.
