This message is sent on behalf of the Peterborough Centennial Museum and
Archives. Please excuse cross postings.
Following last weeks heavy rainfall and flooding in Peterborough, Ontario,
the Peterborough Museum and Archives (PCMA)have asked me to post a short
report on the status of the Roy Studio and the Parks Photographic
Collections that are housed in the Peterborough Public Library. Although
further clean-up and repair work still remains to be carried out in the
library basement, which was flooded, the condition of the Parks and Roy
Collections is stable. Of the approximately 300,000 Roy Studio images only
about 10% became wet and may have sustained some damage. The wet material
has been frozen and will be dried by a commercial salvage and recovery
company. Following that, a determination will be made of any further
remedial treatment that made be needed. The environmental conditions are
stabilized within the storage vault and the remaining photographs have
sustained no damage.
The PCMA staff are now working with staff from the Canadian Conservation
Institute and the salvage and recovery company to determine what further
steps need to be taken to restore normal operations. The staff from the
Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives extend their sincere
appreciation and thanks to all those individuals and institutions that sent
offers of assistance and expressions of concern.
