Binding miniature books is an intriguing challenge. To create tiny books
that open and shut comfortably, traditional bookmaking techniques and
materials must be adapted. Participants will bind a miniature book in a
multi-section pamphlet structure using their own laminates of leather,
coloured tissues and watercolour paper. There will be time to explore
leather onlays and an introduction to hand tooling with foil. They will
also make a slipcase to fit their book. The book can be made with blank
sheets of light weight stationary or printed texts available for purchase
from the instructor.

alternative book structures. Concertina-based structures such as accordian,
tunnel, flag, star and variations thereof, will be used as the starting
point to explore the relation of structure to content and materials.
Starting with the technical knowledge to create the structures, we will then
address the history of the format in traditional and contemporary use, and
then its specific potential as an art form. Students will incorporate
images and text into each book as well as explore the handling of
non-traditional materials. This course is relevant not only to those
interested in artist's books but also to those who have a more general
interest in alternative structures.

Secret Belgian Binding

Location: CBBAG Bindery

Duration: One day; Sat., Dec 11

Hours: 10 am - 5 pm

Course fee: $70 members/ $115 non-members*

Materials fee: $30 payable to instructor

This historical binding was rediscovered by Hedi Kyle and has been
attributed to the Belgians. Many options are available in the decoration of
the book. The text block is sewn separately. The covers are sewn onto the
text block using a pattern of stitches which trap the spine in place with a
set of loops back and forth across the spine between the front and back
covers. This binding yields an attractive and very sturdy book with a
decorative pattern of coloured waxed linen threads on the spine.
