A reminder that on January 25 Jean Dryden will teach her very popular Copyright: An Overview course. On February 7 Jean will teach the Copyright In AV: Sound Recording and moving Images. Both workshops have been updated and 
cover recent amendments to the Copyright Act.

Canada’s Copyright Act attempts to provide a fair balance between the rights of the creators of works and the needs of users. 
That balance is being tested by digital technologies that make it easy to copy and use others' work without their knowledge or permission. The Act was amended in 2012 to address the operation of copyright in the digital environment.

The application of copyright law to audio-visual materials is particularly challenging. The Copyright Act puts sound recordings and moving image materials into two different categories that are subject to very different rules. 
The rules are complex, and not always easy to understand or apply. Furthermore, rapid advances in digital and communications technologies have made it possible to store, copy, and transmit vast quantities of information more cheaply and quickly than ever before, and the application of copyright in the digital environment presents additional challenges
