Subject: [Arcan-l] Digital Preservation course at The iSchool Institute: new
session June 6-7 in Toronto

The iSchool Institute, at the Faculty of Information will be offering
another session of the Digital Preservation: From Theory to Practice - a
2-day workshop first offered in late March in Toronto and Ottawa with
Peter Van Garderen as instructor.

This course is a must for archivists, librarians and other information
professionals responsible for analyzing and deploying digital preservation
programs and digital archives systems.

Digital preservation is applying strategies, tools and resources to overcome
the threat of technology obsolescence and incompatibility to maintain the
accessibility, usability and authenticity of digital information over the
long-term. This interactive course takes its participants from key
concepts, file format analysis, and system requirements to practical,
hands-on application of these concepts using the free and open-source
Archivematica software.

Learning outcomes:
* understand digital preservation risks and strategies
* ability to analyze preservation file formats
* understand the ISO 14721 OAIS functional model and PREMIS preservation
metadata standard
* hands-on experience moving digital objects through OAIS processes
* gain the theoretical context and practical knowledge necessary to analyze
digital preservation projects and systems
