This is an exciting opportunity to join the Corporate Services Department, City Clerk's Office in the City of Toronto, and make your contribution in the following key role:

ARCHIVIST

Major Responsibilities:

Responsible for appraising, selecting, arranging, describing, and processing archival records, and for performing related research activities and public services.
· Makes recommendations regarding the archival value of records in all media. Reviews government records to determine long-term significance, and participates in the development of corporate records retention schedules. Prepares appraisal reports for non-government records, and conducts research on their fair market value
· Accessions, physically processes, and describes archival records in accordance with professional standards
· Identifies issues associated with the conservation of archival records, and works with the Conservator to implement the unit's preservation management program
· Participates in the design, planning, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems to facilitate information retrieval
· Provides reference and advisory services to elected officials, municipal departments, special purpose bodies, and the public
· Recommends policies and procedures as required to improve the preservation and use of the City's archival records
· Supports public programming through the identification of themes and records suitable for exhibits, undertaking research, and preparing explanatory text
· Reviews government archival records to determine accessibility in response to requests made under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and reviews non-government records during processing to identify issues relating to personal privacy
· Prepares articles and lectures to promote an awareness of the City's archival program and its holdings
· Conducts tours of the archives

Key Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated experience in appraisal, acquisition, arrangement, and description of records in all media.
2. Experience working with word processing and database management applications such as WebGencat, Excel and Access.
3. A thorough knowledge of archival theory, standards, and procedures, preservation management, and current legislation as it relates to Archives including familiarity with Municipal Freedom and Protection of Privacy Act and the Copyright Act.
4. Demonstrated experience in processing and providing access to archival records.
5. A good knowledge of information management principles and information technology in an integrated records management and archives environment.
6. An ability to plan and organize processing projects and meet deadlines.
7. A thorough knowledge of local and provincial history.
8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
9. A graduate degree in Archival Studies is preferred.

Salary Information:
$27.96 - $31.46 per hour
(35 Hours per week)
Job Type:  CUPE Local 79
