COPYRIGHT IN PHOTOGRAPHS
Recent amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act included significant
changes in the rules governing copyright in photographs. The new
rules are complex, and not always easy to understand. They affect
both ownership and duration of copyright in photos. Anyone who
preserves or uses photographs must understand the impact of the
changes to the Act.
. Institutions that maintain photograph collections must know how to
establish sound copyright policies and procedures so as to minimize
the risk of legal consequences.
. Individual staff members responsible for photos need clear
information on the new rules so they can provide accurate information
to researchers and donors.
. Those who use photos in their work must understand how the changes
to the law affect them.
Through lecture, examples, discussion, and case studies, this course
will present the copyright rules which apply specifically to
photographs and the application of the rules within the overall
context of the Canadian Copyright Act. Participants will learn about
the difference between ownership of the physical object, and
ownership of the copyright in it. They will also learn how to
analyze a copyright problem and how to administer copyright in a
photograph collection. The course includes the following topics:
. An overview of the Copyright Act and how it works
. The rules which apply to photographs
. A systematic approach to analyzing a copyright problem
. Your responsibilities as a user of others' photos
. The government's agenda for copyright reform.
Target Audience: Librarians, archivists and museum curators who are
responsible for photograph collections; photographers wishing to
protect their rights, and anyone who uses photographs to illustrate
their work in print or online.
The workshop will be held in Ottawa on Tuesday 25 November 2003 from 9 to 4.
