Indeed, my article in the HOPE special volume that Roger Backhouse 
mentions has a a small sample of data on the liberal arts colleges in 
Ohio and Minnesota (two states that have a  large number of small 
liberal arts colleges).  The numbers are not far off those cited by 
Michael Nuwer for the whole country. I am traveling and do not have 
the numbers (or the volume) ready to hand.
