According to Mark Twain Encyclopedia ed. by Jim Wilson in Alan Gribben's
article on "Realism,"
        "Twain somehow missed three major influences of the age
        that succeeded his--Herman Melville, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud--
        he was otherwise very much an advanced reader for his times and
        perspicacious in his selection of material for study."
