This is  quoted  by Myra Jehlen in "Gender"  in  _Critical Terms for Literary
Study_  eds. Frank Lentricchia & Thomas McLaughlin (U of Chicago P, 1990)
She discusses Mark Twain here.  This may be the reason Twain and Boswell
are mixed up.
