To Larry Marshburn: Although Rodney's work on Twain has its virtues, a high
level of reliability isn't among them. One reason for this is that he
apparently too readily took everything literally in Twain's journals--not
realizing that some of the material is fictionalized working notes for A TRAMP
ABROAD (and other writings, of course). Where there's a conflict, Dolmetsch is
