Specifically of interest might be three books on Mark Twain:
1--Ben Tarnoff, The Bohemians: Mark Twain and the San Francisco Writers Who
Reinvented American Literature
2--Mark Twain The Gift of Humor, Harold Kolb Scarecrow
3--Mark Twain’s Audience A Critical Analysis of Reader Responses to the
Writings of Mark Twain; Robert McParland, Scarecrow
