Another possibility for this list of "Huck's Literary Children," especially
female narrators, would be Kaye Gibbons' very fine first person narrated
novel _Ellen Foster_.  The narrator here is an abused young girl in the
south.  Perhaps also Dorothy Allison's _Bastard Out of Carolina_ or Rita Mae
Brown's _Rubyfruit Jungle_ would also fit the bill.
