Louis Budd's _Our Mark Twain: The Making of His Public Personality_
(Univ. of Pennsylvania Press, 1983) might be useful. It focuses on
Twain's active role in the creation and maintenance of his reputation by
looking at the range of public activities, speeches, and, especially,
newspaper interviews he engaged in throughout his career.
