I'd suggest I Been There Before by David Carkeet.  It doesn't take off
from any one work of Twain's but from his whole body of work.  It works
simultaneously as an introduction to his writings and to criticism of
his work as well.  In my opinion, it's the best novel inspired by Twain,
bar none.
