Preliminary Announcement of an International Colloquium marking the
Bicentenary of the Foundation of the "Bibliotheque britannique"

"The Transmission of Culture in 18th and 19th-Century Europe"

Monday, 9 September 1996 through Wednesday, 11 September 1996, at
the Dartington Hall Conference Centre, Devon, England. Organised by the
Centre for Modern Languages, University of Plymouth.

This Colloquium invites scholars from complementary disciplines to
examine the cultural evolution of Western Europe in the periods before and
after 1796, date of the foundation in Geneva of the "Bibliotheque
britannique", the major source of English works in French translation in
Continental Europe until the end of the First Empire.

Themes and topics which it is hoped may be addressed include:

the dissemination of ideas and ideologies through the European press
the transnational diffusion of works of literature, science,
 politics, etc.
theories of cultural change and national identity
         the history of translation
         private epistolary exchanges and networks
the influence of coteries and societies
modes of travel, transport, and the migration of people

The Colloquium will take place in the mediaeval setting of
Dartington Hall at Totnes in the beautiful South West of England. The
Conference Centre is easily accessible by rail, by road, and by air to
Plymouth or Exeter airports. Additional accommodation can be provided for
delegates on the Saturday and Sunday nights before the Colloquium.

It is anticipated that the Colloquium will be held under the
auspices of several national cultural bodies and that the proceedings will
be published. The Conference Committee will welcome papers on a range of
subjects and will be pleased to discuss initial proposals as soon as
possible. For further details on the programme and for booking forms for the
conference, please contact Judith Proud at the address below.
