Subject: Mark Twain Writing Competition Kick-Off
To all Twain Enthusiasts:
You are cordially invited to attend the Buffalo and Erie County Public
Library's Mark Twain Writing Competition kick-off event.
WHAT: Opening ceremony to launch the Buffalo & Erie County
Public Library's Mark Twain Writing Competition. Library acquires
rights to unpublished Twain treasure, "A Murder, a Mystery and a
Marriage."
WHEN: Thursday, March 1, 2001 -- 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: Ring of Knowledge, Central Library, 1st Floor
1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo, NY 14203
WHY: In 1876, it was Twain's intention to invite a group of his
contemporaries to compose their own stories based on an outline that
he had composed. The results were to have been published by his
friend, William Dean Howells, and editor of The Atlantic Monthly.
"A Murder, a Mystery and a Marriage" is the only finished product to
have come from Twain's idea. It has remained unpublished--until now.
To carry on this tradition, an international writing competition to
finish the short story is being launched by the Buffalo and Erie
County Public Library. Entries from young students to professional
writers will be accepted in two categories. The competition will
begin on March 1, 2001, and runs through June 1, 2001. Best-selling
authors and other literary figures will serve as judges for the
competition. Judges and competition details will be announced at the
opening ceremony.
Speakers will include B&ECPL Director Diane Chrisman, Erie County
Executive Joel Giambra, B&ECPL Attorney Patrick Martin, Mark Twain
Foundation Co-trustee Richard Watson, C. Michael Curtis from The
Atlantic Monthly, Boston, MA and Robert Weil from W.W. Norton & Co,
New York City.
WHO: Sponsored by the Library Foundation of the Buffalo and Erie County
in partnership with the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library;
The Poetry/Rare Books Collection of the State University of New
York at Buffalo; Mark Twain Foundation; Mark Twain Project; Kennedy,
Stoeckl & Martin, P.C.; W.W. Norton & Co. and The Atlantic Monthly
