Mark Twain

Collecting Mark Twain
May 11-15, 1998

          This May at Indiana University, the Lilly Library and the
          Division of Continuing Studies will offer a short course,
          Collecting Mark Twain. Taught at the Lilly Library, the course
          will draw on resources that include a large reference
          collection of rare books and manuscripts, as well as a working
          replica of a seventeenth-century English common press.

          Intended for collectors, librarians, and all Twain lovers, the
          course will be devoted to strategies for collecting materials
          about the life and work of Mark Twain, one of the best-known
          and most recognizable of American icons. Participants will
          study some of the great collections and bibliographies, as well
          as how to plan and build a collection.

          Topics will include Twain's personal and family items, books
          from his library, autographs and manuscripts, images,
          publishers' promotional materials, first and other important
          editions of Twain's published works, first periodical
          appearances, movie materials, biography and criticism, and
          ephemera. The course will also examine Twain's history and
          future with collectors, booksellers, autograph and manuscript
          dealers, and auctioneers.

          The instructor for the course, Nick Karanovich, has lectured
          and published widely on Twain. His Twain collection has been
          described as "both the finest and most extensive in private
          hands." Items from his collection were featured in a Lilly
          Library exhibition in spring 1991.

          collection, the course will use many Twain books and
          manuscripts from the collections of the Lilly Library. The
          Library's Twain holdings include a number of important items
          from the collection of J. K. Lilly Jr., who assembled a large
          collection of Twain first editions, complemented by some
          interesting manuscript materials.

          Housing has been reserved in an air-conditioned graduate
          dormitory. The cost will be approximately $29 per night.
          Housing will also be available in a moderately priced hotel on
          campus. Complete information about accommodations and
          transportation will be sent to participants as soon as
          registrations are received.

          The course fee is $420, which includes all instructional
          materials, an opening reception, and refreshments. Housing,
          parking, and meals are not included.

          The registration deadline is May 1, 1998. Enrollment is
          limited, so early registration is recommended.

          Three continuing education units (CEUs) may be earned for
          completing the course. CEUs are nationally recognized units
          earned for participation in noncredit continuing education
          programs.

          The course will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with time out for
          lunch) Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on
          Friday.

          The Lilly Library, located on the Fine Arts Plaza of
          Indiana University in Bloomington, is the principal
          rare book, manuscript, and special collections
          library of the Indiana University Libraries system. Scholars
          from around the world use its holdings, which include 500,000
          books, 100,000 pieces of music, and more than 7,000,000
          manuscripts. Materials in the Library range from extensive
          special collections to major rare books--such as the New
          Testament of the Gutenberg Bible, the four Shakespeare folios,
          and John James Audubon's Birds of America--and original
          manuscripts, including George Washington's letter accepting the
          U.S. presidency, J. M. Synge's The Playboy of the Western
          World, and J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan.

          Indiana University in Bloomington has a beautiful wooded
          campus. In addition to the Lilly Library, the University offers
          such diverse resources as the world-class Musical Arts Center,
          the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, the Mathers
          Museum of World Cultures, the Archives of Traditional Music,
          and a full complement of recreational facilities.

          Bloomington is a city of 60,000 surrounded by hills, lakes,
          state parks, and national forests. Its many cultural
          activities, comfortable midwestern atmosphere, and variety of
          restaurants-including Japanese, Thai, and Tibetan-provide a
          relaxed setting in which to learn.
