As you have probably read in an AP article, the proposal for  formal naming 
of the cove where Sam Clemens and John Kinney (and the next week,  Sam and 
Tom Nye) camped at Lake Tahoe has been tabled. I have some letters of  
support which, in view of the Washoe Indians' comments, I kept in my briefcase.  
The fact is, the cove is becoming known among visitors to the lake as the  
Sam Clemens campsite. 

The Washoe Tribe has a fair interest in the issue;  The lake is their 
ancestral home. The tribal representative, Darrel Cruz, was  very courteous in 
requesting that the board not send the name forward to the  national Board on 
Geographic Names. The board chose not to vote, but to table  the issue.
 
The nonsense raised against the cove as being the campsite has  no merit. 
Combining the backgrounds of the people involved with formal,  recorded 
primary documents and court filings relative to the Brigade claim leave  no doubt 
about the location of the September 1861 camp.
