Stigler was a first rate theorist, but I believe that he played 
a detrimental role in the profession by insisting that only 
Whig history matters. His virtue as a theorist doesn't exonerate 
him for his shortcomings as a historian (or historiographer).

Thanks for your confirmation of Stigler's poor 
"sprach ethick" (sp?). I understand that this kind 
of story is legion.
