I also had one personal encounter with Stigler.  I was invited by the SF 
Fed to have lunch with him.  I was to be the token outsider, the rest of 
the party consisting of friends or colleagues of his. 
 
At lunch, he was charming and open.  I enjoyed his company.  Afterwards, he 
gave a lecture.  I asked a question.  His response was intolerant. 
 
The contrast took me back.  Here was a nice guy.  You could even have an 
open talk in private, but in the open his private views should not be 
challenged.
