 *PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS* 
 
Association for Institutionalist Thought, Annual Conference, held in 
conjunction with the 39th Annual Conference of the Western Social Science 
Association 
 
Albuquerque, New Mexico, April 23- 29, 1997, Albuquerque Hilton and Holiday 
Inn 
 
Papers and proposals for panels and roundtable discussions are requested 
for the Association for Institutionalist Thought Section of the 39th Annual 
Conference of the Western Social Science Association. The Western Social 
Science Association (WSSA) is a professional educational organization 
committed to interdisciplinary scholarship, service, and collegiality. 
Membership in the WSSA is not required for participation at the conference 
although it is strongly encouraged. 
 
The Association for Institutionalist Thought (AFIT) is an organization that 
promotes scholarship in the institutionalist tradition of Veblen, Commons, 
Mitchell, Dewey, Ayres, and Foster. Membership in AFIT of conference 
participants is expected. 
 
For those who have never attended an AFIT conference, let me assure you 
that the annual conference is intellectually stimulating, fun, and 
well-attended. Unlike the case at many conferences, conference participants 
actually attend the panels and engage in (sometimes heated) discussion with 
panelists. I will try to avoid concurrent AFIT sessions so that 
participants will not be split among competing panels. In addition, there 
are two other attractions: Albuquerque is very nice in April; and 
participants can sample panel offerings from a wide range of other 
interdisciplinary WSSA sections. 
 
Please submit panel proposals and paper proposals by November 1, 1996 to L. 
Randall Wray at the address below. Abstracts for all papers must be 
submitted by December 2, 1996. 
 
Students are particularly encouraged to attend the conference. The WSSA 
holds an annual student paper competition. In addition, there will be room 
for student paper presentations on the AFIT program. 
 
The theme for the AFIT conference this year will be "Keynesian and 
Institutionalist Thought: Integration, Assimilation, Segregation?" Papers 
and panels that address the following questions are particularly encouraged. 
*Was Keynes an institutionalist? *Is Keynesian theory institution- 
specific? *Is a "general theory" possible? *Is institutionalist theory 
Keynesian? *How has the economy evolved since the General Theory? Is the 
General Theory still relevant? *Are the Post Keynesians friends of 
institutionalist thought (as believed by Dillard) or are they the foes? In 
addition, any paper or panel that deals with theory, history of thought, 
policy, or empirical work on matters related to institutionalist thought 
will be welcomed.

Abstracts should be submitted on a disk, preferably formatted using WP5.1 
or Word. Alternatively, abstracts can be sent via email in an ascii text 
file. 
 
Those who are willing to serve as discussants or panel chairs should send 
the same information, substituting areas of interest in place of paper 
title and abstract.
