Another important date for the origins of the Chicago defence of Marshallian  
economics and NBER-style economic statistics against econometrics and the  
Walrasian revival was Friedman's 1940 AER review of Tinbergen's work, which is  
almost identical in spirit and detail to Keynes' 1939 and 1940 EJ assaults.   
Friedman's 1955 AER review of "Leon Walras and his System" is also well worth  
reading.
