In response to Jonathan Mote's queryRevolution,
one might try the new book by Donald Winch
_Riches and Poverty_ (Cambridge U. Press, 1996).

I forget the exact subtitle, but it is something about
an intellectual history of political economy ca.1750-1830.

Winch has an entire chapter devoted to Smith's views on the North American
colonies and on the American Revolution in comparison and contrast with
that of Edmund Burke, and throws in comments on Thomas Paine among others
to boot.
