====================== HES POSTING ==================

     At the risk of giving too short a response: the question is, why
study the history of economic thought? The answer given is quite
adequate: to become a better economist. There are other answers; such as,
to defend myself against better economists (whom I know to be fallible);
and because it is a matter of personal intense interest, for reasons that
I cannot explain to anyone's complete satisfaction.
