Thanks, I will make a note of this resource. In this case, however, I
have been using the archives provided by the Center for Bibliographical
Studies and Research. They have the complete collection of the Daily
Alta California editions for 1867 and 1868, as well as everything else
I suppose. The five "missing" letters are not to be found there. I
suspect that they, in fact, never existed. I know there has been a
great deal of work done on this book. I hoped that someone might have
come across a remark on these missing numbers.
As a side note, the very first letter is not found in the August 2nd
edition of the Daily Alta, as stated in McKeithan, but rather in the
25th of August edition - likely a type setting error.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of
in your philosophy.
