================= HES POSTING =================

Folks,

Do you know of any dealers in out-of-print books who have significant
lists in history of economics and related subjects?

We hope to describe such dealers on the HES website, with active links if
and
when they put catalogs online. Paradigms by yours truly are attached: two
dealers in metro Boston, with description and example listings from their
most recent catalogs for economics.

As a first-round effort, let us use the list to pool the knowledge
dispersed among us. For any reference you provide, please include
 - dealer's name, address, phone, fax, internet
 - whether a Rare Books specialist
 - whether you have a recent catalog at hand
 - whether, on the next round, you might prepare a description similar
    to the paradigms below
But more description is welcome.

What have I forgotten? Send comments to improve the effort.

Small. Margaret O'Connell, Bookseller, compiles photocopy lists by
subject, approximately annually. Browse the inventory by appointment.

Economics lists are mainly out-of-print "reading copies" rather than
antiquarian/rare; many prices $10-50.

Lists include two with much HET:
 - Money and Banking (most recent "MONEC 1/96", 255 items)
 - Economic Theory and the History of Economics ("HET 4/96"). I have
misplaced that one; HET 4/95 includes 337 items.

Example listings from "HET 4/95" (almost two years ago):

CAIRNES, J.E. Some leading principles of political economy newly
expounded. NY, Harper, 1874. 421pp. plus pub. list, orig. cl.
    Light/moderate wear to extremeties. *1st Am.Ed. $60.00

CLARK, JOHN MAURICE. Economic Institutions and Human Welfare, 1st
    Edition, NY, Knopf, 1957. 285pp. cl. $25.00

At a glance, I see that HOPE Annual Supplements 22-23 and 25-26 were all
available, $20 or $25.

Other lists include European Economics & Business History (9/95),
General Business History (2/96), Company Histories and Business
Biographies (2/96).

    Brookline, MA 02146
        ph 617 277-7677
        fax 617 731-5941

net 30 days, payable in US funds; all items returnable

"We specialize in Economics, Law, and Americana."

"We are particularly interested in acquiring books in the HISTORY OF
ECONOMIC THOUGHT, such as are represented in this catalogue. . . ."

In the 1990s, Rubin has moved from photocopied typescript lists to
catalogs and, for Rare Books, on to nice catalogs: indexed, large
format, with ample descriptions of the books and their content (frequent
references include Blaug, DAB, DNB, Dorfman, ESS, IESS, Kress, Palgrave,
New Palgrave, and Schumpeter).

It seems that the Rare Books catalogs are updated annually, but the most
recent general, moderate price catalog for economics is 1992 (not a
"nice catalog"). Rubin informs me that another general, moderate price
catalog for economics will appear soon. For now,

GENERAL, MODERATE PRICE. most recent HET is catalog #37, 1992,
"Economics and Related Subjects". Many 1992 prices $25-75. Update to
appear soon.

Example Listings from #37 (1992)

Cannan, Edwin. MODERN CURRENCY AND THE REGULATION OF ITS VALUE.
London, King, 1931. 112pp. Cl., v.g. First edition. "Review copy."
Cannan was "one of the most strident advocates of the old-fashioned
    quantity theory" --New Palgrave. $50.00

Clark, John Bates and John Maurice Clark. THE CONTROL OF TRUSTS.
Rewritten and enlarged. N.Y., Macmillan, 1914. xi,202p.cl. Reprint
    of the 1912 ed.; a blue-print for anti-trust policy. $35.00

RARE BOOKS, EXPENSIVE. most recent HET is catalog #48, 1996, "Economy
and Society -- History of Ideas & A Miscellany of Subjects". Many prices
$200-$2000. This has been updated annually.

Example Listings from #48 (1996)

                          A superlative copy
Pareto, Vilfredo. LES SYSTEMES SOCIALISTES. Paris, Giard, 1902-03.
Two volumes. An exceptionally fine set in the original publisher's
cloth; bright, fresh, and flawless. Housed in handsome separate
folding boxes of deep blue 1/4 morocco, marbled sides, red leather
    labels. $3500.00

    First edition. One of Pareto's earliest and most important books;
also one of his scarcest. In this condition it is rare. Pareto is
one of the founders of modern sociology, and his social and economic
thought remains influential to the present day. In this early,
seminal work Pareto developed the idea, fundamental to his
systematic sociology, that societies are really about instinct and
emotion rather than reason. He also challenged the notion that
socialist societies are unable to achieve the economic efficiency of
capitalism. In developing this argument, Pareto produced a brilliant
analysis of socialist theory as propounded by Marx and the English
"Ricardian socialist." A superb copy of a rare book.

                       "The American Huskisson"
Lee, Henry. REPORT OF A COMMITTEE OF CITIZENS OF BOSTON AND VICINITY
OPPOSED TO A FURTHER INCREASE OF DUTIES ON IMPORTATIONS. Boston,
Nathan Hale, 1827. 196pp. A very fine copy, uncut in contemporary
    wraps. $250.00

. . . [the discussion oriented to content is about twice as long as
    for Pareto, just above]

The entries in the "nice catalog" of Rare Books are comparable to those
in a good annotated bibliography.
