Freedom, Trade and the Nation State
NINTH HEILBRONN SYMPOSIUM IN ECONOMICS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
25-28 June 1997

The topic FREEDOM, TRADE AND THE NATION STATE runs through the German
language literature in political economy like a red thread. In accordance
with the mission of the Heilbronn symposia, the purpose of this
conference is to first systematically examine the relationship between
freedom, trade and the nation state as it has been dealt with in the
German tradition of political economy, secondly to look at this research
from the point of practical needs and desirable options, and thirdly, to
make this literature that is largely locked into German script available
to the international community of scholars in political economy.

With the formation of new independent nations after the collapse of the
communist regime, but also conversely with the possibility that Western
European Member States may merge their nationhoods into a European
federation, the issue of free trade again appears to hinge on the
definition of the political entities which largely define the extent of
the market. Prospects for market economies to emerge in former Soviet
controlled states depends on how national priorities are to be decided
upon, as does the ultimate outcome of the elusive quest for a single
European currency.

In short, the conference is about the conditions Ricardo did not bother to
elaborate.

The conference will be held in Heilbronn from June 25-28, 1997. The
conference site is the traditional Schiesshaus at less than five minutes
distance from the railroad station. On Wednesday, June 28, at four
o'clock, conference participants will gather at the big clock in front of
the railway station. A tour will lead them to the site of the meeting,
the traditional Schiesshaus, through high points of local history and
geography of the city to the Hotel Goetz, where the tour will end for
dinner and a chance to get to know each other.
