Basic Salary: $48,019 at single rate; $51,597 with primary dependents (per
annum net of taxes); Post adjustment: $17,239 at single rate; $18,523 with
primary dependents (per annum net of taxes); Hardship/Mobility: $5,577 at
single rate; $7,436 with primary dependents (per annum net of taxes).

Minimum Requirements:
Education: University degree in engineering, physics, or chemistry from a
recognized university with advanced studies to the master's degree in
sanitary engineering, environmental engineering or environmental sciences
from a recognized university, specialized training in air quality control
is mandatory.

Experience at national level: Seven years of progressively more responsible
experience in national institutions concerned with environmental quality
control mainly in the area of air pollution control and related areas.
Experience in working with public health institutions would be an asset.

Experience at international level: Two years of experience in providing
technical cooperation and/or participating in projects and activities for
the development, management, or evaluation of air quality programs,
preferably in the Latin American and Caribbean regions.

Languages: Very good knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese with a working
knowledge of English.

PAHO announces a Graduate Thesis Grants Program in Public Health
---------------------------------------------------------------------
PAHO, through the Research Coordination Unit of the Division of Health and
Human Development, announces the Graduate Thesis Grants Program in Public
Health. The purpose of the program is to strengthen the professional
development of researchers in the public health disciplines. It also seeks
to increase interest in research projects addressing public health problems
in Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Thesis grants of up to US$ 10,000 are available for professionals enrolled
in master's and doctoral programs in public health disciplines. The grants
can be used to finance field activities and data processing and analysis of
research results.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be professionals who are citizens and reside
in Latin American and Caribbean countries, and are candidates for a
master's or doctoral degree in a public health discipline in duly
accredited programs in these countries. Applications will be accepted from
Latin American and Caribbean professionals enrolled in graduate programs
outside these countries, provided that the proposals are for Ph.D.
dissertations and that they address a research problem relevant to their
country of origin.

There will be two cycles in every calendar year for the receipt and review
of proposals. The deadline for the first cycle is 31 January, and the
second is 31 August. The program will award grants to ten candidates per
calendar year and will select the five best proposals submitted in every
cycle.

Health Policy Research Unit at Queen's University seeks project manager
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Health Policy Research Unit (QHP) at Queen's University is seeking a
project manager to evaluate the Alternative Funding Plan for the Queen's
Medical Faculty. This project involves different  research projects, as
well as research staff and clinical faculty.

Requirements: a Ph.D in Evaluation, Epidemiology, or Health Administration,
or a related discipline, or significant work
experience in health care appropriate to the position of project manager.
Applicants should also have a strong research background and proven
leadership skills. The deadline for applications is April 14, 1997. For

Boston University sponsors program on Health Care in Developing Countries

The Boston University School of Public Health is offering its annual Health
Care in Developing Countries Program from May 31-August 27, 1997. This
intensive twelve-week program provides an overview of issues faced in the
planning and delivery of health care in resource-constrained environments.
The program includes site visits, social activities, and an academic

Canada hosts First International Conference on Fog & Fog Collection
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The First International Conference on Fog & Fog Collection will be held
July 19-24, 1998 in Vancouver, Canada. The theme is "Examining the role of
Fog in Science, Sustainable Forestry, and Development." The conference will
cover topics including: fog physics and chemistry; the role of fog in water
planning for developing countries; and potential applications of fog water
