CALL FOR PAPERS
17th Annual Meeting

The Centre for the History of the Human Sciences and the Department of
Psychology, University of Durham invite you to attend the seventeenth
annual meeting of the European Society for the History of the Human
Sciences. This will take place in Durham Castle, University of Durham, from
Friday 28 August to Tuesday 1 September 1998.
Papers are invited on any aspect of the history, historiography, theory or
methodology of the human sciences. The Programme Committee hope to include
a number of symposia/colloquia and contributions on any of the following
themes would be particularly welcome:

The conference sessions and accomodation will be in Durham Castle. Dating
from 1072, the Castle was the Palace of the Prince Bishops of the
Palatinate of Durham until 1832 when it became the foundation college of
the University of Durham. From its main entrance one is afforded an
uninterrupted view across Palace Green of the celebrated Norman Cathedral.
In 1986 the Castle, Cathedral and the adjacent buildings on Palace Green
were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Several categories of
accommodation will be available but ensuite accommodation is limited.
Approximate accommodation charges (excluding registration fee and
conference dinner) will be:
Standard room 165 Pounds
En suite room * 210 Pounds
* room with shower/bath and toilet
Durham is on the main East Coast railway line from London (Kings Cross) to
Edinburgh. Newcastle is the nearest airport and there are frequent flights
from London (Heathrow and Gatwick) and several flights a day from Amsterdam
(KLM/Air UK) and Brussels (Sabena).
The co-hosting of this conference by the Centre for the History of the
Human Sciences is the final in a number of events celebrating ten years of
publication of the journal History of the Human Sciences. To mark the
occasion a colloquium on _The Historical Imagination in the Human Sciences_
is being planned.
Papers should be submitted by 30 April 1998
