Lloyd,

Everett Emerson's two books offer a relatively definitive account
of Twain's literary life: _The Authentic Mark Twain_ (1984) and
_Mark Twain: A Literary Life_ (2000). In his last book, in fact,
Emerson integrates much of the recent discoveries surrounding
Twain's personal circumstances with his working habits as a writer.
        Hope this helps.
