I'd like to offer my 100% agreement here. I went to Hannibal in 1990 on my
way across America, escaping from the Phoenix Public Library and on my way
to an actual career. Sure, there are the expected tawdry tourist traps,
t-shirts, and Mark Twain fried chicken, but there is also a sense of real
magic for those who love the writings of Twain. In particular, the Tom
Sawyer Cave was unforgettable, and the lookout over the river on the way
back to town gave me a view of river and forest that was free of any modern
distractions. It is a trip that every Twain enthusiast should make once in a
lifetime.
