The explanation given in an A&E biography recently run on Twain's life
said that his name came originally from the fact that he liked to
frequent the saloons out West and "mark twain" meant "put two drinks on
my tab" to the bartender. He later explained his pen name with the river
man's interpretation to appear more respectable.
