Debut Issue of PAHO News

Welcome to the first issue of PAHO News.  The focus of
this newsletter is to disseminate information about the
activities of the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO).  This information was previously published
electronically in Synergy Online, the email newsletter
of the Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH).
Synergy Online will continue to be published weekly as a
bilingual newsletter containing bulletins and news
briefs from CSIH.

Awareness of PAHO:  Baseline Assessment

Thank you to the many people who took the time to fill
out the PAHO survey that was sent to the CSIH mailing
list and all readers of Synergy Online.  As part of our
mandate at CSIH we need to assess our members awareness
of the Pan American Health Organization.

Post Title: Administrative Officer; Level: P.2; Post

28 May 1998.  Duty Station: Washington, D.C.  Tenure:
Two years, first year probationary period;
Division/Program/Office: Division of Health and
Environment (HEP)

SALARY INFORMATION:  Basic Salary: $34,741 at single
rate, $37,035 with primary dependents (per annum net of
taxes).  Post Adjustment: $6,740 at single rate, $7,185
with primary dependents (per annum net of taxes).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: University degree from
an accredited institution in business or public
administration, information systems, finance, social
sciences, or a related field.  Specialization in
information systems would be an asset.  Experience:
Five years of professional experience in general
administration, including supervisory responsibilities
in personnel, budget, finance, procurement and/or
general services, or three years of experience in
managerial positions responsible for the administrative
services of large institutions.  Knowledge of office
automation software packages and information systems
including LAN-based, multi-user computer and database
projects would be an asset.  Languages:  Very good
knowledge of English and Spanish.

Tenure: Two years, first year probationary period.
Division/Program/Office: Pan American Center for
Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences (CEPIS)
Division of Health & Environment (HEP).

Salary Information:  Basic Salary: $49,523 at single
rate; $53,196 with primary dependents (per annum net of
taxes).  Post Adjustment: $14,560 at single rate,
$15,640 with primary dependents (per annum net of taxes)
Hardship/Mobility:  $5,577 at single rate, $7,436 with
primary dependents per annum net of taxes).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Education:  Bachelor's degree in
one of the engineering, environmental or health sciences
from a recognized university with a postgraduate degree
to at least the Master's level in epidemiology or
environmental epidemiology.  Specialization in public
health would be an asset.  Experience:  At national
level: Seven years of experience in the area of
environmental epidemiology, including occupational
health epidemiology.  Responsibilities should also
include the management of projects related to risk
assessment and the development of standards and
indicators, preferably in developing countries.  At
international level:  Two years of participation in
technical cooperation programs and activities in
environmental health.  Languages:  Very good knowledge
of Spanish with a working knowledge of English.  Working
knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Education:  University degree in
computer science, management, liberal arts or a field
related to the management of electronic information
systems.  A master's degree in one of these fields would
be an asset.  Experience:  Seven years of experience at
the national level or five years at the international
level in electronic information communication, including
experience in information networking, text-based
databases, Internet and Intranet applications.
Languages:  Very good knowledge of English or Spanish
with a working knowledge of the other.

Salary Information:  Basic Salary: $49,523 at single
rate; $53,196 with primary dependents (per annum net of
taxes);  Post Adjustment: $7,032 at single rate; $7,554
with primary dependents (per annum net of taxes);
Hardship/Mobility: $2,145 at single rate; $2,860 with
primary dependents (per annum net of taxes).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Education:  Bachelor's degree in
civil, environmental or sanitary engineering with a
postgraduate degree to at least the master's level in
sanitary engineering, environmental engineering,
planning, administration, management or a related field.
Experience:  At national level: Seven years of
progressively more responsible experience in national
institutions concerned with public health, management of
environmental health programs and water supply and
sanitation projects in rural and urban areas.  At
international level:  Two years of participation in
technical cooperation programs and activities in the
development of management and/or evaluation of
environmental health and/or water supply and sanitation
projects.  Languages:  Very good knowledge of Spanish
with a working knowledge of English.
