As reported in the Afro-Nets Discussion List today, Dr. Jonathan Mann
and his wife were killed in the Swissair crash off of Nova Scotia. Dr.
Mann left the World Health Organization in 1990 for a position on the
staff of the Harvard School of Public Health. In 1998, Dr. Mann became
the dean of the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences (AUHS)
School of Public Health on January 1, 1998. Dr Mann was known as a
charismatic leader in the fields of AIDS, public health and human
rights. He was enroute to Geneva for a meeting at WHO on vaccines. Dr.
Mann organized and directed international collaborative AIDS Research
Project in Kinshasa, Zaire (1984-86) and was the Founding Director,
Global Program on AIDS of the World Health Organization (1986-90).

The IDN wishes to express our condolences to Dr. Mann's family, friends
and colleagues for their loss and for the loss to the development
community.
