The University of Western Ontario Library System (Western Libraries)
invites applications for the position of University Archivist.

The mission of the UWO Archives is to collect, organize, describe,
preserve, and make available for use those University records which are
of enduring historical, legal, fiscal and administrative value to The
University of Western Ontario.  This is a new service. To date, some
university archival functions have been informally handled by the
Regional Collection of Western Libraries.

The Archivist, with a staff of two, is responsible to the University
Librarian for the establishment and ongoing management of the University
Archives.  The position is also responsible for providing advice on
records management to all administrative and academic units for the
University.  Among the new Archivist's first tasks will be to establish
mechanisms for the regular forwarding of appropriate records from these
units to the University Archives.  The Archivist is a member of the
Administrative Group of Western Libraries, a committee of senior
managers which discusses and make recommendations concerning library
policy and planning.

This position requires a Master of Archival Science degree, or an
acceptable equivalent. (This includes a Master of Library Science degree
combined with archival experience, or a postgraduate degree in a
relevant discipline combined with formal archival training.)
Substantial experience in an archival setting, preferably a university
archives, is also required.  In order to establish and maintain
effective working  relationships with a wide range of university
personnel, excellent oral and written communication skills are
essential.  The position requires a sound knowledge of records
management, and of preservation concepts and techniques.  A good
understanding of computer application relevant to archives, and prior
supervisory experience are preferred.
